How to Play BaghChal

1. Asymmetric Game Setup

BaghChal (Tiger Move) is a traditional board game of Nepal for two players. It is played on a 5x5 grid with 25 intersections.

  • The Tigers (Bagh): 4 pieces, starting in the four outer corners of the board. They win by capturing 5 Goats.
  • The Goats (Bhakhra): 20 pieces, starting in the player's hand (off-board). They win by completely trapping all 4 Tigers so they have no legal moves.
2. Phase 1: Goat Placement

The Goat player goes first. During Phase 1:

  • On their turn, the Goat player must place exactly one Goat from their hand on any empty intersection on the board. Goats cannot move or jump in this phase.
  • On their turn, the Tiger player must either:
    • Move a tiger to an adjacent intersection along a board line.
    • Capture an adjacent goat by jumping over it in a straight line onto an empty space on the other side.
  • This phase continues for 20 rounds until all 20 goats have been placed.
3. Phase 2: Piece Movement

Once all 20 goats are placed, Phase 2 begins:

  • The Goat player can now move their goats on the board. On their turn, a player moves one of their pieces to any adjacent empty intersection along the lines.
  • Tigers continue to move or capture. Goats still cannot jump or capture.
4. Capturing Rules (Tigers Only)

Tigers capture goats to win. Capturing is optional but highly strategic:

  • A Tiger can jump over an adjacent Goat along any drawn grid line (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal) if the space immediately beyond the Goat is vacant.
  • The jumped Goat is captured and removed from the board.
  • Tigers can only capture one goat per jump (no double check-jumps). Tigers cannot jump over other Tigers.
5. Winning & Draw Rules

The game concludes in one of three ways:

  • Tiger Victory: Tigers capture exactly 5 Goats.
  • Goat Victory: Goats trap all 4 Tigers, leaving them with absolutely zero legal moves (either movements or capturing jumps).
  • Repetition Draw: To prevent infinite loops (e.g. goats chasing tigers or perpetual checking cycles), a warning is shown if the same board position is repeated three times. It is illegal to make a move that repeats a state for the third time.
